100 Act III / Poggio al Tesoro, the Men and the Women 101 Act III / Poggio al Tesoro, the Men and the Women commitment and a maniacal attention to detail, appears destined to emerge victorious from this challenge. In truth, we have already received a certain amount of satisfaction For example, I believe that it is very significant that, in the year of our tenth anniversary, our Sondraia 2008 managed to enter into the group of the Wine Spectator’s ‘Top 100 Wine of the Year’, a prestigious international award which personally fills me with pride as well, as the wine which was honored was from the first vintage during which I was in charge of the winemaking at Poggio al Tesoro». The conversation with agronomist Fanco Dal Colle indicates that he is truly the fine person described by his colleagues, with practically the same words. «I have been at Poggio al Tesoro for less than two years, I know very little about the history of the estate but I have an excellent knowledge of its vineyards, all acquired before my arrival. I like to listen to Marilisa when she recounts how, after the last notarial acts, the notary dubbed her the ‘Lady of the Camelias’ for the fact that so many of the landowners who had sold their plots to the Allegrini family were originally from Italy’s Marches and bore Camelias their last name. Bolgheri’s climate is truly a special one, there is a special and unique light which I have never seen elsewhere. My collaboration with Marilisa and Franco came about almost by accident when they requested that I come to Poggio al Tesoro to resolve a few problems in the management of the vineyards. Here I have found two working companions of exceptional level. Nicola is an exuberant and decisive person with whom I have a very direct working relationship; our rapport is defined almost exclusively by our common involvement with the grapes. We discuss every aspect of the work, from the winter pruning all the way up to the harvest and there are trials and experiments to discover which aspects of the vineyard work result, in the end, in higher quality grapes and wine. Marrico calls himself an unfriendly person, but this is not at all true; he is the authentic reference point in the life of the estate, a fundamental figure who holds together the group.
