We pamper the vines and always look for new methods to avoid stressing them and, instead, enhancing their potential. Elia Braguzzi, who has assisted Franco throughout the season, has devised a new alternative method to topping this year: heart-shaped ‘accapannatura’ (bunching of braided upper canopy canes which are then tied to the next bunch), also used for the Cabernet Franc planted in 2004. This is not a ‘romantic’ practice, as in reality there are many technical reasons for it: the vine is not cut, as happens with topping. The leaf canopy is left intact and braided so that the wide curve of the canes allows good air circulation. Some producers in the area have noticed the newmethod we have introduced and are adopting it on their estates: for us it is a pleasure to see how some of our intuitions are taken into consideration due to their effectiveness!
