Dobbiamo individuare con precisione il momento della raccolta: anche solo un paio di giorni, infatti, possono fare una grande differenza. Non dobbiamo permetterci di compromettere il lavoro di un intero anno. Con lo scopo di prelevare alcuni grappoli da portare in laboratorio Lorenzo Fortini è passato dai vigneti che si affacciano sulla Via Bolgherese, quelli SOPRASTRADA i cui terreni contengono preziose argille ricche di fossili e conchiglie. Non c’è analisi che, tuttavia, possa prescindere dall’assaggio del chicco, indicatore fondamentale con cui l’enologo, basandosi sulla sua esperienza, capisce se possiamo procedere con la vendemmia. Lorenzo e Franco si soffermano in vigna per qualche minuto, guardano i diversi filari, osservando e discutendo sull’omogeneità della maturazione nei nostri vigneti: sembrano soddisfatti, le premesse sono buone. Il Merlot che proviene dalla zona della Chiesina di San Giuseppe, promette molto bene. Lorenzo vuole esplorare la possibilità di vinificarlo in purezza e gli assaggi, già in queste prime fasi, sono decisamente incoraggianti. The sampling is constant and monitoring becomes more and more frequent and meticulous. We have to identify the exact time for harvesting: even just a couple of days can make a big difference. We must not allow ourselves to compromise an entire year’s work. Lorenzo Fortini has passed through the vineyards that overlook Via Bolgherese, known as SOPRASTRADA – whose soils contain precious clays rich in fossils and shells – with the aim of picking some bunches to take to the laboratory. There is no analysis, however, that can disregard the berry tasting test, a fundamental indicator which the winemaker, based on his experience, uses to understands if we can proceed with the harvest. Lorenzo and Franco stand in the vineyard for a few minutes and look at the different rows, observing and discussing the uniform nature of the ripening in our vineyards: they seem satisfied, the conditions are good. The Merlot from the Chiesina di San Giuseppe area promises well. Lorenzo wants to explore the possibility of a separate vinification and the tastings, even at these early stages, are definitely encouraging. SETTEMBRE | SEPTEMBER OGGI MERLOT! MERLOT TODAY! Le uve sono belle e sane, produrranno un vino opulento, intenso, dotato di grande carattere ed eleganza. Stiamo gestendo questo vigneto in maniera mirata per le esigenze specifiche della varietà Merlot: abbiamo già da qualche anno iniziato a fare prove di vinificazione in purezza. Siamo sicuri che ci sono le potenzialità di fare un grande monovarietale. A Poggio al Tesoro il Merlot è stato impiantato sia nella nella zona della Chiesina di San Giuseppe, lungo la via Bolgherese, sia nel vigneto Le Sondraie, in cui è presente una subzona ricca di argilla e povera di sabbie. È una varietà che predilige i terreni argillosi, da cui si ottengono vini potenti, concentrati, con intense strutture tanniche e, nel contempo, molto fruttati e seducenti. The grapes are lovely and healthy and will produce an opulent, intense wine with great character and elegance. We are managing this vineyard in a targeted manner for the specific needs of the Merlot variety: for some years now, we have begun carrying out separate vinification trials. We are sure that the potential exists to make a great single-varietal wine. This varietal prefers clayey soils, producing powerful, concentrated wines with intense tannic structures that are, however, still very fruity and seductive. At Poggio al Tesoro, the Merlot was planted both in the area of Chiesina di San Giuseppe, along Via Bolgherese, and in the Le Sondraie vineyard, where there is a sub-area rich in clay and poor in silt.
