POGGIO AL TESORO HARVEST DIARY | DIARIO DELLA VENDEMMIA 15 Le maturazioni prolungate di Chiesina di San Giuseppe The prolonged ripening at Chiesina San Giuseppe Il Vigneto Chiesina di San Giuseppe, che si estende su una superficie di 7 ettari accanto al Via Bolgherese, presenta un suolo di origine alluvionale con depositi molto antichi, ricco di scheletro e ciottoli e caratterizzato da argille sciolte e sabbie. La presenza di calcare e ferro gli conferisce una colorazione particolarmente rossa, creando una condizione ambientale ideale per le varietà tipiche di Bolgheri. Il Merlot è stato piantato in una zona caratterizzata da un maggior livello di argilla nello strato superficiale, con ciottoli distribuiti in profonditàchene inibiscono ilnaturalevigore. Nei terreni maggiormente ricchi di scheletro sono stati impiantati Cabernet Franc, per la produzione del vino icona dell’azienda, Il W dedicato a Walter, e Cabernet Sauvignon, che ben si adattano a suoli poveri e ciottolosi a livello superficiale. I terreni dei vigneti di Via Bolgherese e Chiesina di San Giuseppe sono ideali per la coltivazione di quei vitigni che si esaltano con maturazioni prolungate e producono vini ben strutturati e profumati. Ne sono la riprova i primi vini ottenuti in cantina da questa vendemmia 2021, che già si esprimono con “concentrazione di frutto e complessità - commenta l’enologo – le uve si sono presentate pulite, in perfetto stato sanitario, e quindi dotate di un comparto aromatico espressivo di grande complessità. Ora seguirà un percorso di affinamento in legno estremamente accurato, così che i tannini e la parte strutturale del vino si maturi per esprimere al massimo il potenziale varietale”. The vineyard Vigneto Chiesina di San Giuseppe, which covers an area of 7 hectares next to Via Bolgherese, has soil of alluvial origin with very ancient deposits, rich in gravelly matter and pebbles and characterized by loose clays and sands. The presence of limestone and iron give it a particularly red colour, creating an ideal habitat for Bolgheri’s typical grape varieties. Merlot was planted in an area with a greater amount of clay in the surface layer, with a density of pebbles in depth that inhibit its natural vigour. Cabernet Franc was planted in the soils richest in gravelly matter for the production of the company’s iconic wine, W Dedicato a Walter, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are both well suited to soils that are poor and pebbly on the surface. The soils in the vineyards of Via Bolgherese and Chiesina di San Giuseppe are ideal for the cultivation of vines that are enhanced with prolonged ripening and produce wellstructured and fragrant wines. Proof of this are the first wines obtained in the winery from this 2021 harvest, which already express “concentration of fruit and complexity” according to the winemaker. “The grapes were clean, in perfect health, and therefore equipped with an expressive aromatic component of great complexity. This will now be followed by an extremely accurate process of ageing in wood so that the tannins and the structural part of the wine mature to express the varietal potential to the full”. La 2018 in uscita è stata una vendemmia di grande equilibrio che rimarrà per certo annoverata negli anni a venire tra le migliori di Bolgheri. Sondraia, grazie alle sue componenti organolettiche ed al suo “spessore”, è la chiara testimonianza di come il taglio bordolese s’incontri armonicamente con la ricchezza di un grande territorio che in pochi anni è riuscito ad assurgere ad esempio di zona viticola eletta e vocata a produrre grandi vini. We welcome the new vintage of Sondraia Bolgheri Superiore DOC, Poggio al Tesoro’s flagship wine, with great enthusiasm. The latest release, 2018, was a fantasticallywell-balanced vintage that will certainly be remembered for years to come as among the best in Bolgheri. Thanks to its organoleptic components and its ‘depth’, Sondraia clearly shows how the Bordeaux blend comes together harmoniously with the richness of a large area that in a few years has managed to emerge as an example of a winegrowing area well-chosen and superbly suited to producing great wines.
