Uno dei principali vantaggi di operare in una zona ventilata, è la minore incidenza di malattie della vite, come la peronospora: più a lungo le foglie rimangono in ambiente umido, maggiore è la possibilità che questo microrganismo si sviluppi. Una brezza delicata e costante tra i filari dei nostri vigneti asciuga subito la parete fogliare e riduce notevolmente il rischio della malattia. I freschi venti notturni inoltre contribuiscono ad una buona escursione termica, fenomeno favorevole ad una perfetta maturazione delle uve. Non ultimo, il vento soffia tra i nostri vigneti sfiorando mirto, pere selvatiche, viburno, specie che producono bacche che, disperse da questo movimento, creano un microsistema utile alle piante. Il vento è un elemento potente e prezioso che talvolta può diventare minaccioso, quando si presenta in modo violento. A Poggio al Tesoro, abbiamo imparato a “governarlo” grazie a barriere naturali, le siepi, utili non soltanto per definire i confini dei campi, ma anche per proteggere le coltivazioni. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, the constant winds in Bolgheri constitute a fundamental factor in the cultivation of the vine. One of the main advantages of operating in a breezy area is the lower incidence of vine diseases, such as downy mildew: the longer the leaves remain in a humid environment, the greater the risk this microorganism will develop. A gentle and constant breeze between the rows in our vineyards immediately dries the leaf canopy and greatly reduces the risk of disease. The cool night breezes also contribute to a good day- to night-time temperature range, a favourable contributor to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Last but not least, the winds that blow through our vineyards caress myrtle, wild pears, viburnum, etc., species that produce berries which, dispersed by this movement of the air, create a micro-system that is useful for the vines. Wind is a powerful and precious element, although it can sometimes become threatening when it blows aggressively. At Poggio al Tesoro, we have learned to ‘regulate’ it thanks to natural barriers such as hedges, which are useful not only for defining the boundaries of the land parcels but also for protecting our crops. I VENTI L’ACQUA It is well known that water is an element of vital importance in nature. At Poggio al Tesoro, due to the proximity of the sea and the aquifers present in the subsoil, we are fortunate to have excellent water reserves. Stefano, part of Franco’s team, discovered a natural well last year, capable of providing up to 130 litres of water per minute to the Via Bolgherese vineyard. This event happened completely by chance; one day, looking for a fault in the pipes near the church of San Giuseppe, Stefano discovered that he had some dowsing skills! The practice of dowsing has origins that date back many centuries. This term refers to the ability, possessed by very few people, to perceive the presence of water in the subsoil by walking on it. Caution is a must here, as there is no scientific explanation of the genesis of this phenomenon! We obviously can’t presume to say much more but what is certain is that thanks to Stefano’s intuition, we now have a very precious water resource in our vineyards! È a tutti noto che in natura l’acqua costituisce un elemento di vitale importanza. A Poggio al Tesoro, grazie alla prossimità del mare e alle falde acquifere presenti nel sottosuolo, abbiamo la fortuna di avere ottime riserve idriche. Stefano, parte del team di Franco, ha scoperto, lo scorso anno, la presenza di un pozzo naturale, in grado di apportare fino a 130 litri al minuto nel vigneto di Via Bolgherese. È accaduto tutto per caso; un giorno, cercando un guasto alle tubature vicine alla Chiesina di San Giuseppe, Stefano ha scoperto di avere delle doti da rabdomante! La pratica della rabdomanzia affonda le sue origini nei secoli passati. Con questo termine si intende la capacità, posseduta da pochissimi, di riuscire a percepire la presenza di acqua nel sottosuolo camminandoci sopra. Il condizionale è d’obbligo, perché non esiste alcuna spiegazione scientifica della genesi di questo fenomeno! Noi non abbiamo ovviamente la presunzione di poter dire di più: quel che è certo è che, grazie all’intuizione di Stefano, abbiamo una preziosissima risorsa idrica nei nostri vigneti. WINDS WATER
